Module 8 · Practicing Safely / 8.1

Start with the life the money supports.

The first decision can be to wait.

Imagine your bicycle breaks on the same morning that a crypto price falls sharply.

You need the bicycle to get to work. The repair bill is due now. The market does not know that, and it does not have to recover before you need the money.

That is why a financial decision begins with your life: the bills you must pay, the people who depend on you, and how much uncertainty you can carry.

Give essential money an essential job.

Return to your financial base. A positive monthly gap does not make all of it trading money. Bills, reserves, debt and longer goals may already have claims on that gap.

Keep near-term spending and emergency needs separate from speculative assets. An emergency reserve should be accessible and suited to the bills it may have to pay. A volatile token is not a dependable substitute.

The right reserve depends on income stability, obligations, insurance and other support. A familiar rule of thumb cannot decide the amount for every household. The purpose is to avoid making an urgent expense depend on a favorable market price.

High-interest debt also creates a known cost to examine before adding investment risk. Paying down principal can reduce future interest, subject to the loan terms. That saving is different from hoping a speculative asset outperforms the rate.

This course cannot know your full circumstances. It teaches the questions and mechanisms. A qualified adviser can help apply them when your finances or obligations are complex.

A separate decision
First decide what the money must do for your life.

Think in losses you could actually face.

Before considering any amount, imagine losing all of it permanently. Would rent, food, debt payments or another person’s care depend on recovering it? Consider the whole household, not just the number that feels exciting today.

Price loss is not the only path. You might lose access through a failed custodian, a scam, a lost backup or a mistaken transfer. Buying outright avoids one set of borrowing risks; it does not make recovery inevitable.

If you cannot give an asset, its custody and its records enough attention, deciding not to participate is reasonable. Learning the system does not create an obligation to own it.

Borrowing changes who controls the timetable.

Here is a deliberately simple example. You put in $100 and borrow $100 to buy $200 of an asset. Ignore fees and interest. If the asset falls to $150, the debt is still $100. Your remaining equity is $50: a 25% asset decline has cut your equity in half.

If the asset reaches $100, it equals the debt. A real platform can liquidate earlier under its margin rules, selling collateral to protect the loan. Depending on the product, losses may extend beyond the original deposit.

Leverage increases exposure through borrowing or derivatives. You can be forced out before any later rebound—and a rebound might never happen. This beginner course uses no leverage or borrowed funds in its activities.

Debt held fixed; no interest or fees. Real liquidation can happen before equity reaches zero.

The debt does not shrink with the asset.

Keep the record from the beginning.

Taxes depend on where you live and what you do. In the United States, digital assets are generally treated as property for federal income tax. Selling, exchanging them for another asset, or spending them can produce reportable gains or losses. Receiving them for work can create income.

Buying with cash and simply holding generally does not create a gain or loss. Transfers between your own wallets generally do not either, but assets used to pay transfer fees can have separate tax consequences. Holding period and cost basis matter; losses also have limits.

Keep dates, quantities, transaction identifiers, fees, value in the relevant currency, and acquisition records. Rewards, gifts and other activities need their own treatment. Keep records even if a platform does not send you a tax form. Check current local guidance before acting.

The idea to keep

Readiness means understanding the obligations, possible loss, borrowing mechanics and recordkeeping before taking risk. It is not a box the course can check on your behalf.

If you choose to continue, the next task is to protect the account and verify every destination.

Make it yours

A moment to try it.

Take your time. Explain the reason, not only the answer.

A person plans to use a volatile token balance for a tuition bill due next month. What risk exists even if they believe in the technology?
